The Algorithm (Probably) Doesn’t Hate You. Here's How to Get on Its Good Side

Let's get one thing straight. Nobody at LinkedIn, Instagram, or Facebook is sitting in a dark room personally deciding your post isn't worth showing to your mom's book club.

But it can feel that way, especially when you post the thing you spent two hours on and it lands with the enthusiasm of a Monday morning meeting that could have been an email.

🎉 The good news: every platform has quietly told us what it wants.

🤦🏾 The bad news: what it wants keeps changing.

Here's where things actually stand in 2026, platform by platform, with real before and after examples so you can stop guessing and start posting like you mean it.

LinkedIn: Stop Networking, Start Teaching

LinkedIn in 2026 has fully committed to its bit. It wants to be a mini business school, not a popularity contest or trophy shelf.

The platform now rewards content that drives meaningful professional engagement, AKA saves, comments, and shares. Content that just racks up likes from people scrolling past on autopilot doesn't get the same lift it used to.

Translation: your “excited to announce” post is competing with people's actual expertise, and it's losing. Educational posts written from lived experience consistently outperform generic brand messaging, and the algorithm favors genuine, meaningful conversation over self-promotion and jargon.

If you have a founder, an operator, or a subject-matter nerd who actually knows things, put them front and center. Let them share what they've learned the hard way, not what the brand wants to sell.

Format matters too. PDF carousels have become LinkedIn's highest dwell-time format, with a well-designed slide deck holding viewers 20+ seconds per impression. That's basically an eternity in scroll time. And don't reuse a vertical TikTok or Reels clips; content that's obviously cross-posted from another platform gets penalized, while video re-edited and sized specifically for LinkedIn's format performs better.

Make LinkedIn Work for You

❌ Before: Excited to announce that our agency has officially onboarded three new clients this quarter! Grateful for the trust and looking forward to great results together. #growth #consulting

✅ After: A client asked me last week why their sales team kept missing quota even though lead volume was up. Here's what we found when we dug into the pipeline data, and the one process fix that turned it around in under two weeks. BTW, yes, LinkedIn posts are starting to sound a bit…cheesy and similar, but we have to appease the algorithm gods if we want to stay in the game.

⏰ TL;DR: Post from a real person, teach something you actually know, and reply to every comment like you mean it (especially in the first hour).

🔥 Insider Tip: If you’re including a link in your caption, be sure to write “link below in the first comment.” LinkedIn, like most platforms, wants people to STAY on their platforms so they prioritize content that doesn’t include a link in the main caption. Some social scheduling tools have this “first comment” section feature, use it!

Instagram: Reels or It Didn't Happen

Instagram has basically become a video app that occasionally shows you a photo. Reels are now the main entry point for users, with the feed built almost entirely around short-form video.

Instagram no longer runs on one algorithm either. Feed, Reels, Stories, and Explore each rank content differently based on who you interact with and what's relevant in the moment.

Here's the part that trips people up: polish isn't the flex it used to be. Strong storytelling and authentic moments now outperform overly polished, overly promotional posts. Instagram's models are also watching more than just whether you double-tapped. Watch time, comment sentiment, and even objects on the screen (like “GIF stickers in Stories) all factor into what gets shown.

Also worth knowing before you tag everything under the sun: Instagram now caps hashtags at five per post or Reel, so pick the ones that actually describe your content instead of hedging your bets.

✅ After: We almost scrapped this design three times before it worked. Here's the version we threw out, the version that finally clicked, and why the ugly first draft actually taught us something.

⏰ TL;DR: Show up on video, keep it a little rough around the edges, and reshare the good stuff your customers post about you. User-generated content like customer photos and reviews keeps a feed feeling authentic and connection-driven.

🔥 Insider Tip: If you really don’t want to be on camera, there’s a workaround. Taking a graphic and popping a free stock video behind it in Canva will help your content get seen by more people. Also, consider investing in ads for your best content since it’s 100% pay-to-play nowadays, unfortunately (we can help with this, as a one-time training on how to set up ads that get actual results, or just run them for you if you’re busy).

Facebook: Value First, Ask Later

Facebook gets written off as “where your MAGA aunt lives,” but for community-building it's quietly one of the most underrated tools available, especially through Groups. Facebook's algorithm prioritizes community engagement over brand broadcasting, and a post with fifty thoughtful comments will outrank one with five thousand passive likes.

Groups create the conditions for that conversation to actually happen. Well-managed niche communities see conversion rates of 20 to 23 percent on direct offers, compared to the 1 to 3 percent average for e-commerce overall.

The golden rule, whether you're posting on your Page or in a Group, is to maintain roughly an 80/20 split: 80 percent value-driven content, 20 percent promotional. The algorithm actively penalizes overly promotional posts. If your first move in a Group is a sales pitch, you've already lost, since conversation drives engagement and sales posts just get met with disdain.

Timing matters here too. Tuesday and Wednesday are consistently the strongest posting days, with early morning and the 5 to 8pm wind-down window performing best, while Sundays are reliably the weakest.

✅ After: One of the most common questions we hear from new clients is what actually happens in the first thirty days of working together. Here's the honest answer, including the part that surprises most people.

⏰ TL;DR: Be useful before you're promotional, answer your comments fast, and if you run a Group, treat it like a dinner party, not a billboard.

🔥 Insider Tip: Similar to LinkedIn, native videos (uploaded directly to Facebook) get prioritized way over an external link like from YouTube or TikTok. If you're sharing a video, download it and upload it natively instead of pasting the link, even if it means losing the view count on the original platform.

The Blog: Write for Humans, Structure for Everyone Else

Blog SEO didn't die when AI search showed up, it just got a new, kinda weird, roommate. Google's 2026 guidance for generative search emphasizes valuable, unique, non-commodity content, and established SEO practices remain foundational for visibility even in AI-generated results.

There's no separate secret playbook for “AI SEO.” What matters is a technically accessible page and information worth retrieving, quoting, and recommending.

The single biggest shift is that clarity now doubles as strategy. The bloggers who win in 2026 aren't the ones making content sound sophisticated. They're the ones making complicated decisions feel easier for the reader. That means answering the actual question your reader typed in, near the top, in plain language, instead of burying the point under three paragraphs of throat-clearing and fluff.

❌ Before: In today's fast-paced digital landscape, businesses of all sizes are increasingly recognizing the importance of a well-rounded social media strategy. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the many facets of building an effective online presence.

✅ After: Wondering why your posts get views but no leads? It usually comes down to one of three things: the wrong platform, the wrong offer, or the wrong moment in the funnel. Here's how to tell which one is yours.

⏰ TL;DR: Pick topics you and/or your team has genuine, first-hand experience with (like how I, Rachel, am writing this post with my 11 years of industry experience), answer the reader's question early, and structure the post so both a human skimming on their phone and an AI summarizing it for someone else can find the point fast.

🔥 Insider Tip: Put SEO words in your image titles and descriptions and write your H2 subheadings as the actual question people type into Google or ask AI tools. For example, ‘How long does it take to fill a hotel sales director role"‘ outperforms 'Staffing Timeline,' because it matches how people actually search, and how AI search tools decide what to pull into an answer. The Thread Connecting All of It

Every one of these platforms is, in its own dialect, saying the same thing: be a real business, run by real people, saying real things, not a content calendar performing normalcy.

  • Consistency beats virality.

  • Conversation beats broadcasting.

  • And the “boring” fundamentals, like answering comments, posting on a rhythm, and showing your face, are outperforming the shiny tactics nine times out of ten.

None of this requires reinventing your brand. It just requires showing up as yourself, on purpose, a little more often.

Want This Handled For You?

Posting consistently is HARD, and it’s exactly the kind of work Starlight Social does every day: platform-specific strategy, content calendars, and copy that sounds like your team on its best day, not a template.
